The Farm-to-School

What can we do to promote healthy kids and healthy farms?

A growing number of American communities have found an answer in farm-to-school projects. These projects enable schools to serve locally grown fruits and vegetables in their cafeterias.

A successful farm-to-school project can bring fresh and nutritious food to students. At the same time, it can boost the earnings of local farmers, many of whom are themselves living on low incomes. New York State farmers are twice as likely to qualify for food assistance programs as the average low-income New Yorker.

In 2003, GardenShare helped to organize the Farm-to-School Support Project. This pilot project recruited farmers and coordinated the delivery of their produce to several school cafeterias in the North Country.

Building on its success, the project has now developed into a farmer-run organization called North Country Grown Cooperative. The member-farmers of this cooperative supply local farm products to SUNY Potsdam, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton, Clarkson University, Massena Central School, and other institutions.

GardenShare applauds these farmers, volunteers, and food service staff for helping to promote healthy kids and healthy farms.
