GardenShare will host a Harvest Social on Thursday, November 10, at 7:00 p.m. in Thatcher Hall on the campus of SUNY Potsdam. The event is free and open to the public.

Friends and newcomers alike are invited to join GardenShare staff for an informal evening of music, socializing, and enjoying delicious pies baked from local ingredients by the chefs of PACES Dining Services. 

Music for the evening will be provided by a jazz ensemble from the Crane School of Music.

At the social, GardenShare will present its ninth annual Growing Community Award to Katherine Lang. Each year this award salutes organizations or individuals whose efforts strengthen food security in northern New York State.

As a nutrition educator and then a regional food system developer with Cornell Cooperative Extension, Katherine Lang worked tirelessly to improve the health and vitality of the North Country. She was a founding board member of the North Country Grown Cooperative, which markets and delivers locally produced goods to colleges, restaurants, and other regional institutions.

From 2003 to 2007, Ms. Lang was a member of the GardenShare board of directors, serving as president for most of that time. Later, as program coordinator, she led GardenShare's efforts to make fresh, local food available to low-income community members both at local farmer’s market and through CSA memberships at local farms.

"Katherine's leadership as board president saw GardenShare through a period of tremendous growth," said GardenShare's current president, Heather Sullivan-Catlin. "Her knowledge of community food security issues, programs, and policies was vital to the development of our initiatives and partnerships with other organizations."

Ms. Lang now resides in Skaneateles.

Past recipients of the Growing Community Award have included the Food Bank of Central New York, North Country Public Radio, the USHare Project of the Canton Unitarian Universalist Church, Seedcorn, Betsy Hodge of Cornell Cooperative Extension, the North Country Grown Cooperative, PACES at SUNY Potsdam, the Canton Farmer’s Market, the Keene Central School Garden Project, and the South Jefferson Central School Food Service Program.
