Well, I had my next blog all planned out in my head. After a weekend of beautiful fall weather, a great trip to the farmers' market and harvesting onions with my daughters, I had much to say. That is put on the back burner as I now want to express my sadness over the loss at Mr. Cook's farm. I just happened to be in Ogdensburg today and bought a copy of The Journal, only to see the headline: “360 Animals Killed In Barn Fire”. That is sad enough, but when I read it was the Cook's farm....I felt an even deeper sorrow. I only know him from going to the market, but he has always been sweet to me and I have enjoyed his products. The Cooks lost about 300 chickens, 39 pigs, six turkeys, 2 cows and 20 ducks in the fire.

I was going to even mention Mr. Cook in my originally planned blog. Our interaction, as simple as it was last Friday, helps create the sense of satisfaction I feel knowing the people who help grow and raise my food. I was a regular customer of his at the Canton Farmers' Market in 2009. Because I have been away a fair amount this summer, I didn't see him much this market season. Yet, last Friday when I did see him, he greeted me warmly and remembered my name. He showed me the roasting chickens he now was selling, told me about sales at the Potsdam Food Co-op and that he noticed I hadn't been around much this summer. Casual, sure. But have this type of interaction happen numerous times at a market and you start to feel appreciative.

This defines community. The caring about what happens to not only your friends and families, but to people with whom your relationship may range only from a quick hello to a brief yet sincere discussion. Community is not defined by some narrow rule that includes some yet excludes others. It extends through our connections and in many different ways.

I really don't know much more about the Cooks than what I have shared – but have been thankful for the good food they provide and the kindness shown. The article mentions he hopes to be back at the market next summer and I look forward to that. In the meantime, I expect some sort of community help for them. Please stay posted for that invitation......
